FLEXHYON Public Datasets Now Available

FLEXHYON public datasets and spectral imaging data

Behind every new industrial technology, there is data. Before an innovative heating process can be tested in real industrial environments, researchers need to carry out lower TRL experimental activities to understand how materials respond to the new solutions being developed.

FLEXHYON is now making part of this research process more visible. The project has published its first public datasets, providing researchers, industry stakeholders and other interested audiences with open access to selected spectral imaging data generated within the project.

Why Public Datasets Matter

Public datasets are an important part of Open Science. They allow research data to be reused, verified, cited and further explored by others.

For a project such as FLEXHYON, this is particularly relevant, as the project adheres to the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. Making selected datasets publicly available helps build a stronger knowledge base for future analysis, comparison and innovation.

To support this approach, a dedicated FLEXHYON subcommunity has been created on Zenodo, within the European Union research community, to host public datasets generated by the project.

Datasets published in the FLEXHYON Zenodo subcommunity are automatically linked to OpenAIRE. Originally launched as a European project, OpenAIRE is now a non-profit organization, OpenAIRE MAKE, committed to promoting Open Science and improving the discoverability, accessibility, shareability, reusability, reproducibility and monitoring of data-driven research results at global level.

To make these resources easier to find, FLEXHYON has created a dedicated page for public datasets, where currently available and future datasets can be accessed.

The FLEXHYON public dataset section currently includes two research datasets related to spectral imaging. The datasets contain images acquired using SWIR and hyperspectral imaging systems in the wavelength ranges 400–1700 nm and 1010–2500 nm, respectively.

Material Moisture Content Spectral Imaging Dataset

Material moisture content spectral imaging dataset

This dataset contains SWIR hyperspectral imaging data collected from two types of materials: a heterogeneous calcium carbonate mixture, comprising powder and larger aggregates, and green ceramic tiles prior to the drying process.

The dataset supports research on the analysis of moisture content and material properties in industrial processes. More specifically, it enables researchers to investigate the spatial distribution of moisture and material characteristics, providing valuable insights into the behaviour of materials before, during and after drying or thermal treatment.

In this way, it can support the development of more efficient processing and monitoring solutions.

Biomass Spectral Imaging Dataset

Biomass spectral imaging dataset

This dataset contains SWIR hyperspectral imaging data collected from rockrose, Cistus ladanifer, and common juniper, Juniperus communis, explored in the form of wood and foliage samples under two different conditions: fully dried and wet.

This dataset can support researchers working on the segmentation of biomass components and voids across different spectral ranges and moisture conditions.

Supporting Open Science in Sustainable Industry

Both datasets were acquired during experimental campaigns conducted at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, within the framework of FLEXHYON. Their publication reflects the project’s commitment to Open Science and transparent research practices.

By making selected research data publicly available, FLEXHYON supports future research, enables other researchers to further explore and reuse the data, and contributes to advancing knowledge in the field of sustainable industrial technologies.

At the current stage of the project, FLEXHYON is generating and disseminating research data while continuing the development and validation of more efficient electrified heating systems for industrial applications.
