Project
FLEXHYON: Transforming Industrial Energy with Electrified Heating
FLEXHYON is an EU-funded project focused on developing flexible hybrid electrified heating solutions to replace fossil fuel-based industrial processes. By integrating microwave, heat pumps, and ultrasound technologies, the project aims to improve energy efficiency, sustainability, and operational flexibility in energy-intensive industries. The project targets industrial applications where conventional heating methods contribute significantly to carbon emissions and high energy consumption.
FLEXHYON’s approach not only enhances environmental performance but also strengthens industrial competitiveness by reducing operational costs and increasing process efficiency.
Objectives of FLEXHYON
FLEXHYON is designed to tackle key challenges in industrial heating through:
- Developing and integrating fully electrified heating technologies that are scalable and adaptable to different industrial applications.
- Demonstrating the feasibility of microwave, heat pump, and ultrasound-based heating in real industrial settings to ensure efficiency and reliability.
- Reducing CO₂ emissions and energy dependency on fossil fuels, supporting the transition toward carbon-neutral industrial processes.
- Ensuring economic viability by conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCC) for each implemented solution.
- Enhancing the digitalisation of industrial heating processes, introducing AI-driven process control and real-time monitoring.
Expected Outcomes of FLEXHYON
The project will deliver three innovative heating technologies, each tailored for specific industrial sectors. FLEXHYON will demonstrate significant energy savings, reduced GHG emissions, and improved production efficiency across pilot sites. The project will also provide a scalability roadmap to facilitate the widespread adoption of electrified heating solutions in European industries.
By the end of the project, FLEXHYON aims to set a benchmark for sustainable industrial heating with replicable and commercially viable solutions.
